Crucifixions and birthdays don’t normally go hand-in-hand. It’s possible, even probable, that the last time they did it was at some point during the Roman Empire.
In the 21st Century, they’ve come together courtesy of Dublin-based Tandem Felix and their latest single Were You There (When They Crucified the Birthday Boy)?. Latin for ‘Happy, at last’ perhaps our Roman citizen would appreciate in a wry sense the bands’ name and the songs’ title.
Taking the form of a Skype conversation between two sides of himself, vocalist and guitarist David Tapley recounts the tale of an individual whose special day went from good to downright catastrophic. You can see the video below.
The inventive video is supported by Tapley’s unseen bandmates – Evan Keogh on bass, Conor Muldowney on guitar, Éna Brennan on violin, and Jeffrey Courtney on drums – who play a subtly countrified Americana influenced track with discrete layers and an impeccable ear for the right amount of what should be played.
Tandem Felix is looking to release their debut album next year, and by the looks of Were You There (When They Crucified the Birthday Boy)?, expect humour, great musicianship, but above all some cracking story-telling.
