There’s a chance that the name Jack Sels won’t be known to you. It certainly wasn’t known to me. Even if you hail from his home country of Belgium, you’ll probably be in the minority if you do know of him. For those that don’t, he was a post-war jazz musician of high esteem, playing the tenor saxophone. You don’t get to play with luminaries such as Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Young, Lou Bennett and Lucky Thompson by being rubbish.
Dorian 0437 is a previously unreleased track that, along with 26 others, will be released on Minor Works – a collection of rare, unreleased, and live tracks that showcase his undeniable talent (hell, it got me tapping my foot and I don’t really ‘do’ jazz). SDBAN are releasing Minor Works digitally and physically on 2CD and vinyl formats, and it is available for pre-order now. I can’t help but get the feeling the vinyl release will be the ultimate choice to listen to the whole thing on.
